Celebrate Success: The Impact of Positive Reinforcement on Goal Achievement

Positive Reinforcement:

Positive reinforcement is a concept in psychology that involves adding a rewarding consequence to strengthen a behavior, making it more likely to be repeated in the future. It is a way of encouraging and reinforcing desired actions by providing a positive association.

In this blog, I share a case study that demonstrates the transformative power of positive reinforcement on goal achievement, exploring how a positive mindset can be the catalyst for changing your life.

A Case Study:

My first life changing experience with the amazing effects of positive reinforcement came while doing an internship at a Juvenile Detention Center. The center used a level system for behavior management. There were 6 levels and everyone came in at a level 3. They could either go up a level with good behavior which resulted in more privileges or they could go down a level with poor behavior, resulting in less privileges. For most kids the system functioned efficiently. There were, however, some kids who would go to the lowest level and then seem to give up. This often resulted in even worse behavior causing safety concerns.

I decided to test an intervention using positive reinforcement .

I wanted to see if I could help these kids get motivated to earn higher levels and thus behave better. I chose one subject, Terry, who had been at the lowest level for months. , I met with him one on one to discuss a plan and find out what motivated him. If he agreed to the plan he was given a “reset” and placed back on level 3, like he had just arrived. He was then given daily positive reinforcement for good behavior. In his case, he chose to earn a Coke. I would meet with him everyday to discuss progress and give praise and encouragement, another form of positive reinforcement.

Terry’s attitude and behavior changed dramatically and he quickly climbed to the highest level! Staff were surprised and impressed. We tried it with more kids with success. This was many years ago and I’m proud to say this program still exists. They call it an “administrative intervention”.

The reasons it worked:

  • A sense of “buy in” as they participated in developing their own plan

  • Daily positive reinforcement gave them something short term to focus on.

  • They gained a feeling of accomplishment with small successes

  • It increased a sense of self worth and confidence.

  • They earned respect and admiration from staff and peers, thus getting another form of positive reinforcement

Positive Reinforcement is a powerful tool for any behavior change.

Research has consistently proven that positive reinforcement works. Several main behavior change organizations employ positive reinforcement strategies including Weight Watchers and Alcoholics Anonymous.

ACTION STEPS:

You can implement your own form of positive reinforcement to achieve your goals. Think about a daily incentive you can give yourself for accomplishing your goal for the day. Think of things that motivate you. Remember to keep it simple and realistic.

Positive reinforcement is the secret sauce that fuels our journey toward goals.

By infusing the path with moments of celebration and joy, you not only enhance motivation but also create a sustainable momentum.

It's the piece that transforms challenges into stepping stones and goals into personal triumphs.

As you embrace the power of positive reinforcement, your aspirations become not just destinations but a fulfilling, ongoing adventure of self-discovery and achievement.
